We are rich

Last night, in preparation for leading intercession times during the upcoming counseling school, I read a 30 day prayer guide entitled Voice For The Voiceless. It was a great little book, with pictures, statistics, stories, and prayer points on topics like war, starvation, slavery, and honor killings. At the end of reading, I felt a bit convicted about my petty concerns these last months. Concerns about how to make our home more like a home instead of a trailer, how to get "organized" with my time, and how to stay ahead of the chaos of managing a home and ministry. These are valid things - in their rightful place - and I'm sure God is not offended by my efforts, but reading about starving children with swollen bellies and little girls sold into sex slavery was enough to make me realize - I am SO blessed. We are rich. We eat three meals a day, we have more than one change of clothes, and our girls are being raised in a relatively safe environment - no danger of being ripped away from us by soldiers, or someone who needs to harvest organs for a transplant. (Sounds terrible, I know, but it happens.) When my girls cry, I assess the problem and take action. Too hot? We'll turn on the air. Too cold? I'll grab your sweater. High fever? Medicine is in the bathroom cabinet. Just need to be held? My arms are more than willing. How many children are orphaned because of AIDs or war? How many people live with nightmares inflicted by harsh realities? We are blessed, more than we know, and I don't think it's possible to improve our happiness any more than what it should be now.
